In this introductory webinar, registrants will build an understanding of the three main components of an organizational Geographic Information System (GIS) as well as some preparatory techniques to build organizational value in this key technical discipline area.

  • Software and tools typically used by GIS practitioners;
  • Data, contexts, and project lifecycles that are typically used and explored by GIS practitioners;
  • The roles, professional skills sets, and typical organizational models used within a GIS group; and
  • Simple methods by which additional value can be derived from GIS at many organizations.

  • Learn about open source and proprietary GIS technologies and their relative merits;
  • Learn about how GIS interfaces with other similar tools in an engineering context;
  • Learn about the various tools that can be employed by GIS practitioners in an engineering and geoscience context;
  • Learn about the appropriate scales and limitations of GIS technologies;
  • Learn about typical data sources and common GIS data formats;
  • Learn about GIS professionals and their education and career progressions;
  • Learn about some GIS organizational models that can be employed for the successful management of GIS practitioners; and
  • Learn about how to integrate, grow or unlock the value of GIS at your organization.

Target Audience

Any professional engineer and/or geoscientist who is interested in learning more about GIS from a high level perspective. While this is an introductory session, GIS-adjacent professionals and GIS practitioners will still be exposed to ideas and concepts that can reinforce their practices.

Aaron Licker is currently principal of Licker Geospatial Consulting Co. (LGeo), a small 8 person GIS consultancy in Vancouver BC. Prior to starting his own company in 2017, Aaron was the GIS Lead Golder Associates in BC. Aaron has been consulting as a GIS professional for nearly 15 years. In that time, he has cultivated strong relationships with dozens of clients and colleagues who hold his work in high esteem.
