Event Description


The presentation is focused on providing the audience with some general guidance on planning and undertaking blasting activities near FortisBC Gas assets, either by themselves or using third-party blasters, blasting consultants, or blasting engineers. In addition, the presentation is designed to provide some background on blasting activities, introduce the audience to various terms related to blasting, and discuss the effects of blasting on pipelines and other infrastructure. It will also cover salient highlights of FortisBC blasting standards and the step-by-step process of the review and acceptance of blasting applications. It should be noted that the requirements provided in the presentation is for general information only and must not be used or referred to for any specific project, which may have different requirements beyond what are mentioned in this presentation.

About the Event


Speaker

Mujib Rahman, P.Eng., M.Eng.

Senior Integrity Engineer, Geotechnical, FortisBC Energy Inc.

Mujib Rahman works as a Senior Integrity Engineer at FortisBC and has 30+ years of geohazards and project management experience. At FortisBC, Mujib works in the System Integrity Department and is responsible for planning and implementation of the Geohazards Management Program, including the seismic hazards management program. In addition, he is responsible for monitoring all blasting activities in the vicinity of gas assets, reviewing and providing approval of blasting applications near FortisBC gas assets. On behalf of the System Integrity Department, he also works as a Project Engineer, selecting major projects, and is responsible for providing geohazards oversight supports to the project team to ensure the design and construction meets relevant codes, standards, and System Integrity Department requirements and practices.

Mujib has worked for Metro Vancouver as a Project Engineer; previously, he worked for Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (at Highland Valley Copper Mine) as a Geotechnical Engineer and at AMEC-Earth and Environmental as Materials Consultant. He brings significant overseas and management experience of large complex projects to his position. Overseas project experience includes being team lead for joint projects with the Corps of Engineers, US Army Pacific, at Military Engineering Service, Bangladesh Army, and with the Kuwait Army in demining operation and disposal of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in Kuwait after the Gulf War 1991. He has hands on experience of conducting large and small scale blasting activities.
