Event Description

This presentation will provide a short overview of the Disctrict of Saanich's 2020 Climate Plan and its development, with a focus on the approach taken to building internal and external relationships and the value that has provided in identifying and realizing opportunities necessary for success. It will showcase several collaborative actions and creative measures that have been implemented to lower our GHG emissions and increase resiliency.

About the Event

The 2020 Climate Plan 100% Renewable & Resilient Saanich was adopted by Council in January 2020. The Plan provides a policy framework and action plan for a comprehensive response to climate change in our community over the next 10 years. It aims to:

  • Cut GHG emissions in half by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050;
  • Transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050; and
  • Prepare for a changing climate.

A year into implementation and our first report card has been released. It measures progress on both actions and outcomes and identifies successes but also shortcomings, allowing for corrective action to get us back on track. The Plan’s success is attributed to it being comprehensive, integrated, evidence based, innovative, implementable, and most importantly, due to it being built on a strong foundation of incredible partnerships and collaboration.
