Event Description

Ever wondered how transportation corridors and developments in mountainous terrain are affected by the risk of avalanches?

Event Presenter(s)

Dr. Bruce Jamieson, P.Eng.
Dr. Dave Gauthier, P.Eng., P.Geo.

About the Event

Join Bruce Jamieson and Dave Gauthier for an introductory overview of avalanches and discussion on how aspects of snow avalanches are different from other slope hazards such as debris flows and affect assessment and mitigation. Methods for characterizing avalanche terrain and extreme events will be outlined. Short examples of assessment and mapping methods for work sites, transportation corridors, and forests, and examples of mitigation methods will be discussed.

Presenter

Dr. Bruce Jamieson, P.Eng.

Bruce has 35 years experience as an avalanche consultant on projects for transportation corridors, pipelines, transmission lines, mines, ski lifts, residential developments, and backcountry huts.

Dr. Dave Gauthier, P.Eng., P.Geo.

Dave holds a PhD in civil engineering, specializing in snow avalanche mechanics and has experience in operational avalanche forecasting and control for rail and highway corridors.
