Sold that company the following year, and went to Montreal. -Established a state of the art plant, again manufacturing cellulose insulation, and sold my shareholding in the spring of 1980. -Moved to Kelowna that summer, and in the fall, established Advance Precast Ltd. with two other partners. I have held the position of President and General Manager, to this date. -My responsibilities are all-encompassing... managerial, legal matters, building /precast design, directing the installation crew, CWB Welding Supervisor and SMAW ticketed welder. - As my entire career has been as a "hands-on" worker, I offer practical experience that is very valuable to engineering design/approaches.

I am a 2-year P.Eng in my early 30's that took the long way (read: scenic route)... I took a technical diploma program at Camosun College first, and after working for a few years decided to pursue an Engineering Degree at UBC Okanagan, graduating with distinction in 2013. I have grown and fabricated sapphire crystals, interviewed with Apple, constructed one of the biggest run-of-river hydro projects in BC, conducted technology studies and lifecycle analyses for BC's LNG projects, built hydrocarbon liquids facilities in Alberta, and now I work as an engineering consultant for industrial projects. One thing is certain... the scenic route has been exciting! And while I have no doubts your journey will be exciting too, it can be beneficial to talk with someone who has walked in your shoes or taken the path you are considering. My one goal is to take some of the fear and anxiety out of planning for the future, by telling you what I had to go through and some of the tools I used to improve my chances of success. At the very least, I can point you in the direction of some delicious beers to help you stay sane along the way!

Throughout my eight years of work experience in the consulting environment I have been exposed to multiple disciplines and industries and feel that I can help a young geologist or engineer understand the various types of work that they may become involved in. I have always enjoyed acting as a mentor to summer students and new hires that we bring on and want to expand beyond my organization to help others.

Starting in 1994, I was fortunate to spend four summers during my undergrad at UBC (geological engineering) interning at Cominco Exploration (mineral exploration), AMEC (geotechnical / geological / env), Jacques Whitford (env / hydrogeological) and SRK Robinson (mining / geotechnical) and upon graduation worked with AMEC for five years and obtained my P.Eng. and P.Geo. in 1999. Following this, I spent the next fifteen years in business (investment banking and m&a (Merrill Lynch), institutional equities (UBS, TD Securities), proprietary trading (TD Securities) and merchant banking (Forbes & Manhattan)) after obtaining my MBA at UofT. Mining is the common theme to my business experience - be it banking, researching, trading or investing in the industry. Since 2013, I have managed global corporate development for a mid-tier global mining company and currently sit on the executive management team of the company. I'd like to think that I can offer a mentee some perspective on: 1. business related careers and experiences outside of pure engineering; 2. other career choices which compliment their skillset, academic background and likely aligns with other potential interest that he/she may consider pursuing; 3. how else an engineering background can be leveraged to pursue other interests. Lastly, I don't have a particular mentee preference for industry or expertise - mining, finance and general business have some relevance, but again no particular preference.

Nick has received his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 2003. In spite of his father who was a conservative petroleum engineer he was a progressive entrepreneur. He has kicked off two successful businesses in construction and farm animal food while he was a student. Right after school he started working in his professional career path in manufacturing, and energy industries. His passion in education never stopped him from getting his Law Degree in 2006. Same year he started his Masters in Mechatronics and Control at TU Delft, Netherlands. After one year he moved to Canada to continue his Masters at University of Simon Fraser and UBC. While Nick was a graduate student he had instructed and co-instructed more than 10 courses in the Faculty of Engineering, Science, Math and Management. He believes in training and involving young professional as the main stream at work and business. He strongly insists that usually they are the ones that always brings new values to our economy; they are motivated, energetic with exceptional perspectives. Nick is a communicator. He knows how to efficiently speak, listen, and get the point out when interacting with professionals with different background. He has worn many hats in variety of businesses and technologies. As a result, he has a unique ability to explore individuals' talents, advise them with his recommendations, and help them to achieve to their goal to the excellent. We can summarise Nick in the following points: ? He values the quality in business/work; He says credit is not as important as success. ? I feel that mentoring can be a valuable complement to the other components of personal development and learning. It helps to maintain a balance with other activities by providing an external reference point. It can also foster good self-awareness which is foundational to a rewarding life. My technical background is metallurgical engineering and I have had the opportunity to develop expertise in a both fundamentals and practical applications, and formally and informally teach other engineers. In each of these areas it has been important to learn how to listen in order to fully understand people’s needs and respond in a way that is most beneficial for them. An open mind is also key in order to accept valid differences in values as they influence the perspectives that individuals bring to their life balance. In addition to the benefits it provides to others, mentoring becomes its own path for personal growth towards the same goals.

I am a geologist, with a strongly applied experience ie using geology for mapping blast hardness, to determine hydrogeology information, choose soil capping material for mine waste dumps, to determine structures that can affect slope stability. I have 19 years in a large open pit operation, involving much mapping and 10 years in charge of slope stability. I also have some experience in mineral exploration involving soil sampling, trench mapping, outcrop mapping, diamond drill supervision, etc. I have recently worked 14 years as a contractor/consultant with mining companies, mineral exploration companies and some geotech consultants, so am familiar with being an independent consultant.

I am an intermediate engineer participating in the consulting field since graduating in 2008. I studied engineering physics at UBC and have worked as a mechanical engineer since 2011. I think it gives me a unique perspective on more traditional engineering disciplines. With less than 10 full years of experience (unless you want to count coop), I have a good memory for the beginning of my career while still having enough experience to talk about opportunities I've seen for myself and others. The most value I can provide a mentee is a willingness to listen to concerns, and share openly about my experience.
