Purpose

The City of Vancouver’s Urban Design Panel (UDP) advises Vancouver City Council and staff about development proposals or policies, including major development applications, rezoning applications, and other projects of public interest.


As well, the panel helps the Planning Department and City Council create urban design policy, including the design and interrelationship of all physical components of the City of Vancouver.


The panel reviews all civic building projects, including bridges, roads, parks, beautification projects, transit systems, civic buildings, and design competitions.


The UDP does not approve or refuse projects or make policy decisions.

Approval Process

Applications for this position will be reviewed by Engineers and Geoscientists BC. Please note that the City of Vancouver requires all volunteers, including Engineers and Geoscientists BC nominees, to apply for volunteer roles through their website.


The UDP representative for Engineers and Geoscientists BC will provide a summary of their activities to Engineers and Geoscientists BC on a semi-annual basis.   

Skills and Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer with a minimum of 10 years of experience practicing in a civil or municipal engineering field.

Term of Office

  • Appointments are 2 years in length.

Average Time Commitment

  • Meetings are held every two weeks, normally on Wednesdays at 4:00 PM at the Vancouver City Hall, 453 West 12th Avenue. Due to COVID-19, meetings are currently being held online.
  • Panel members may not miss more than four consecutive meetings without obtaining leave of absence from the panel.
  • Before each meeting, panel members are required to review agenda items and be prepared for discussion.
