Motions for Debate at AGM Published

Posted on 04 October 2017
Five motions have been submitted to Engineers and Geoscientists BC for consideration at the association’s upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) in Whistler, BC, on October 21. In accordance with the proposed AGM Rules, motions received by September 21 are being published in advance in order to enable more informed debate on the issues.

Three of the motions submitted met the criteria of the proposed meeting rules necessary for advance publication:

Motion 1: That Council consider publishing the salary ranges, as referenced in the "APEGBC Staff Compensation Policy," for all positions that have a "reference salary" greater than $75,000.

Moved by Ernest Portfors, P.Eng., FEC
Seconded by Ed Hauptmann, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon.)

Additional information: View the Staff Total Compensation Policy and learn more about the association’s approach to responsible financial management.

Motion 2: That Council consider publishing in the financial reports the total compensation (salaries plus benefits) for all staff who receive over $100,000 per annum, as well as their reimbursed expenses.

Moved by Ernest Portfors, P.Eng., FEC
Seconded by Ed Hauptmann, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon)

Additional information: Read about Council’s decision regarding a similar motion submitted at the 2015 AGM.

Motion 3: That Council consider rescinding the "New Procedure for submitting 2017 AGM motions" as detailed on the Association web site. Note my letter detailing objections to these procedures has been submitted for the September/October edition of Innovation.

Moved by Ernest Portfors, P.Eng., FEC
Seconded by Ross Rettie, P.Eng., FEC

Additional information: The mover’s letter is available here. The new procedure for submitting AGM motions is drawn from the proposed AGM Rules, approved by Council in June 2017.

The two additional motions submitted did not meet the criteria of the proposed meeting rules necessary for advance publication.

Under the proposed meeting rules, members should be prepared to speak to the urgency of their motion.
