Regulation of Firms Permit to Practice Training

The Regulation of Firms Permit to Practice training provides guidance to Responsible Registrants and other individuals employed by or under contract with a registrant firm of Engineers and Geoscientists BC on the requirements for applying for and maintaining their firm’s Permit to Practice. The Responsible Registrant must be an engineering or geoscience professional(s) who will be responsible for ensuring that the firm’s practice meets ethical, quality management, and continuing education requirements. They will also serve as a point of contact for practice reviews, audits, and investigations.

All individuals acting as Responsible Registrants for a registered firm are required to complete this training within 12 months of the firm receiving their Permit to Practice. The training can be initiated and completed prior to applying for the Permit to Practice.

The training consists of 6 courses with a total of 15 self-paced modules. Responsible Registrants can complete the course materials at their preferred pace and schedule, pausing and returning to the training if needed.

The modules review the ethics, quality management and continuing education and competency requirements for firms, legal requirements under the Professional Governance Act and Engineers and Geoscientists BC Bylaws, and provide guidance to firms in developing or updating their Professional Practice Management Plan.

The estimated time to complete the training is eight hours. Each module includes a Knowledge Check that ensures the participant’s understanding of the material and requirements. A final exam must successfully be completed with a minimum mark of 80%.
