Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia protects the public by requiring businesses that wish to use restricted or trademarked words in their business names to obtain consent from the association prior to registration/incorporation. The association will generally grant consent to a business that has at least one person on active staff who is properly qualified and registered in British Columbia to practise professional engineering and/or professional geoscience.
Under Section 22 of the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, it is prohibited for a company, partnership or other legal entity to engage in the practice of professional engineering and/or professional geoscience or to advertise or use any word, name, title or designation mentioned in the definition of practice of professional engineering or practice of professional geoscience. Any other word, name, title designation, descriptive term or statement that implies a business is entitled to engage in the practice of professional engineering or professional geoscience is also strictly prohibited.
