Senior Civil/Geotechnical Engineer – Tailings

We are looking for a strong and pro-active Geotechnical/Civil Engineer to join our Technical Service team, reporting to the Vice President – Mineral Processing, Tailings and Dams. The successful candidate will have exceptional technical skills and experience in tailings management and dam designs, construction, inspection, operation, maintenance and closing of tailings storage facilities, heap leach pad, water dams and/or waste dumps coupled with the ability to coordinate with consultants (EoR – Engineer of Record) and operations (process managers and tailings engineers), delivering primarily geotechnical and tailings management expertise to the Company’s operations and Projects.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise for the management of tailings storage facilities, heap leach pads, water dams, and waste dumps at the Company’s operations and development projects.
  • Work with management and technical teams at operations and projects to ensure that engineering reports and studies are completed by the appropriate expert on a timely basis to meet the requirements of the mine plans.
  • Work with the consultant to ensure that those engineering studies are to a high standard and meet the Company’s requirements and obligations.
  • Lead operational teams in completing dam safety inspections, risk assessments, and tailings management reviews based on the TSM (Toward Sustainable Mining Program from the Mining Association of Canada) to satisfy dam safety requirements.
  • Stay current of the monitoring and inspection status of Company’s tailings storage facilities, heap leach pads, water dams, and waste dump.
  • Advise on geotechnical risk reviews and audits at operating sites and assist in the risk assessment, formulating plans to mitigate any identified hazards and follow up the progress with the sites.
  • Scoping and delivery of geotechnical investigations to support tailings project in coordination with the EoR.
  • Work with other technical experts to promote the adoption of a holistic life of mine approach with respect to tailings disposal, tailings backfill, and mine closure.
  • Mentor site geotechnical tailings engineers and recommend training and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with preparation of technical and other corporate reports or presentation.
  • Assist environmental department with incident investigations as required.
  • Stay current with advancing technologies and promote their application where they can be applied to improve the company’s businesses.
  • Frequent travel to international locations is required.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • B.Sc. degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, geotechnical engineering or equivalent is required, with a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive tailings, dams, heap leach pad, and/or waste dumps experience.
  • Experience in tailings or dam inspections.
  • Knowledge of stability analysis, dam breach analysis, and tailings storage facility design and/or is required, with experience in seismic and hydrology studies preferred.
  • Professional engineer designation or equivalent (or ability to achieve a professional designation).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish is required.
  • Highly organized with the ability to work independently and a commitment to meeting deadlines.
  • Takes ownership of their work with a can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Ability, willingness, and good health to travel frequently to the company’s mines and projects. Several of the company’s mines and projects are located at high altitude and/or in remote regions in Latin America.
  • Good knowledge of Latin-American culture and customs is an asset.
