Learn the Skills to Engage Others in Geoscience

Posted on January 4, 2023

Geoscientists can learn specific tools to sharpen their communication skills in the Geologize Practical Communication course, which is being offered free to all registrants by Geoscientists Canada.

Using effective communication skills can help geoscientists clearly explain complex concepts to educate the public about natural resources and hazards as well as engage more people in the profession.

The Practical Geocommunication course provides the expertise and techniques to improve communication skills in person, in writing, and through media. Those taking the course will be guided through the specific principles and practises of effective geoscience communication with case studies and practical activities.

Practical Geocommunications covers topics such as:

  • Geologizing and transposing geoscientific content into everyday concepts;
  • Identifying distortions in the media and using strategies to counter effectively—with an emphasis on climate change; and
  • Strategies to promote powerful social media engagement in the geosciences.

Professional registrants, trainees, and students registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC can access the online course. The self-paced course usually takes about 15 hours and may be eligible for up to 10 Continuing Education (CE) Hours. Check the Guide to the CE Program for more detail.
