About the Continuing Education Program

The practices of engineering and geoscience are constantly evolving. Continuing education supports registrants in their efforts to stay current with changes, which is necessary for maintaining competency and fulfilling registrants' primary duty to protect the public and the environment with respect to the practice of professional engineering and geoscience.

  • The Continuing Education (CE) Program came into effect on July 1, 2021.
  • The Professional Governance Act (Act) requires Engineers and Geoscientists BC to develop and implement a mandatory CE Program.
  • Obligations under the CE Program are outlined in section 7.6 of the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Bylaws.
  • The Guide to the CE Program provides a complete explanation of how the Program works.

Applicability

Professional Registrants

The Continuing Education Program is mandatory for all professional registrants.

  • See the Requirements webpage for more information.
  • Professional registrants who do not meet CE obligations will be subject to late fees, suspension, and cancellation.

A Professional is any registrant who may engage in reserved practice. If you have retired or are no longer providing professional services or advice in BC, and your registration is in good standing you can apply for non-practising status or resignation through your online account to have your CE reporting obligations removed. Before applying, you are encouraged to consult section 3.1.5. of the Guide to the CE Program to understand your requirements for Professional reinstatement.

Registrants on a leave of absence (e.g., parental, medical, compassionate care), or experiencing other extenuating circumstances, may apply for an exemption to the CE Program requirements on a yearly basis. The deadline to apply is June 30 to avoid late fees.

Individuals Without Practice Rights

Individuals without practice rights must complete the 10-minute Annual Reporting submission between May 1 and June 30 each year and are not required to complete Continuing Education Program requirements. This includes individuals who change their status from practising to non-practising during the reporting and late reporting periods.

Annual Reporting is separate from Continuing Education reporting; see the Annual Reporting webpage for information regarding its applicability and exclusions.

If you are retired or no longer working in BC and have not applied for non-practising status or resignation, then you are still considered a practising registrant and must complete the CE reporting requirements to avoid late fees, suspension, and cancellation.
