Tricia J. Cook Memorial Fund

Engineers and Geoscientists BC's Foundation is pleased to announce inauguration of the Tricia J. Cook Memorial Fund; we are pleased to offer an annual award of $2,000 to an outstanding woman in engineering or geoscience returning to her chosen profession after the birth of a child.

The Fund has been proposed by Anthony H. Rice, P.Eng., P.Geo., in honor of his late wife, Tricia J. Cook, P.Eng. As a registrant with Engineers and Geoscientists BC since 1983, Tricia pursued an exemplary career, with continuous growth, as a professional civil engineer, and an enviable mastery of work-life balance. While working full time, she was able to raise her two sons, who graduated university with chemical and electrical engineering degrees. For the first 18 years of her career, Tricia worked extensively in the field of infrastructure development for First Nations communities throughout British Columbia. In the last 20 years of her career Tricia worked to develop the urban transit infrastructure for the Metro-Phoenix, Arizona area, where sadly she lost a courageous 6 year battle with breast cancer on March 19, 2020, at 60 years of age.

The award is to assist with the costs related to skills upgrade and professional development in preparation for return to work, which could include, for example, child-care expenses, post-secondary tuition fees, fees for continuing education courses, professional dues, and costs related to back-to-work safety equipment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • P.Eng., P.Geo., EIT, GIT registrant for at least 2 years with Engineers and Geoscientists BC;
  • Plans to return to same employer;
  • Minimum of 2 years with employer;
  • A resident of British Columbia; and
  • Returning to work within 24 months of the birth of child.

application Process 

Following a call for nominations in July, the registrant's employer or another Engineers and Geoscientists BC registrant prepares a letter of recommendation for the award based on merit, career commitment, and professional growth potential.

  • A letter of recommendation that outlines the following:
    • Demonstrated commitment to quality of technical work;
    • Developing communications, leadership, and mentoring capabilities;
    • Interest in pursuing professional development activities; and
    • Participation in professional societies and organization.
  • A proof of employment of registrant.
  • The letter should include a contact address, phone number(s), and email address.

The deadline for receipt of applications is September 10, 2021.

Evaluation of Applications

Details of the criteria along with the weighting of each to be used for the selecting the award recipient based on recommendation letter.

  • Demonstrated commitment to quality of technical work (50%)
  • Developing communications, leadership and mentoring capabilities (25%)
  • Interest in pursuing professional development activities (15%)
  • Participation in professional societies and organization (10%)

Frequency

One award, in the amount of $2,000–$2,500, will be made to the successful applicant annually. Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Foundation reserves the right not to grant the award if a suitable candidate is not found. A successful applicant from the immediately preceding year will not be considered.
