Diversity and Inclusion at Engineers and Geoscientists BC
Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Human Rights and Diversity Guidelines establish our expectations for how engineering and geoscience registrants should educate themselves on issues of human rights and diversity – including considerations around gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, indigenous people, newcomers to Canada, and those with disabilities – and clarifies our expectations that all registrants uphold the principles of fair and equitable treatment of other professionals, clients, employees, and associates.
We are currently planning an update to these guidelines to ensure this document reflects our commitment to address issues around racism and discrimination wherever possible within our mandate as a regulator. We will be engaging with registrants on this issue, beginning in the fall 2020 with a roundtable to hear from organizations that represent and advocate for diverse groups within the engineering and geoscience communities.
Human Rights and Diversity Professional Practice Guidelines
Engineers and Geoscientists BC has endorsed the Engineers Canada 30 By 30 goal. The goal of 30 By 30 is to increase the number of newly licensed engineers who are women to 30% by the year 2030. The organization’s approach to 30 By 30 includes a council-endorsed strategic plan, guide to action, and champion network.

The Women in Engineering and Geoscience Division is open to all registrants who are interested in supporting the connection, attraction, promotion, retention, and advocacy for women in engineering and geoscience. The Division values align with other Engineers and Geoscientists BC initiatives for diversity and inclusion and promote equity, integrity, inclusiveness, and collaboration.

Engineers and Geoscientists BC is proud of be a partner of Engendering Success in STEM (ESS).
Engendering Success in STEM (ESS) is a research partnership with the shared goal to foster women’s inclusion and success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). We bring together social scientists, STEM experts, and stakeholders in STEM industry and education. The goal is to use an evidence-based approach to break down the biases girls and women face on their pathway to success.
The consortium has designed and tested interventions that harness the power of positive social interactions to reduce the effects of implicit gender bias. These interventions target the obstacles that are unique to each step along the path from early education to industry, and have been broken down into four projects:
Engineers and Geoscientists BC is a proud partner of Project RISE.
Project RISE aims to create positive cultural change for women and men in science and engineering by: (1) educating participants about implicit bias, (2) fostering supportive and respectful interactions between men and women in the organization, and (3) providing them with a clear understanding for how to combat bias. Applying techniques to increase openness and understanding of the consequences of bias, our aims in Project RISE are to highlight women’s often untapped potential, equip women with strategies for coping with social identity threat, and empower men to become effective allies for equality.
