Seminar Description

The Professional Practice Guidelines on Annual Equipment Inspection and Certification, developed with the support of WorkSafeBC, will assist Engineering Professionals in carrying out certification of annual equipment as required in the BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (OHSR). This seminar will review and discuss the Guidelines in depth to help practitioners meet the standard of practice for annual equipment inspections and certification.

Seminar Objectives

  • Review application of Guidelines to annual inspection and certification work under the BC OHSR;
  • Delineate the roles and responsibilities of parties involved in annual inspection and certification;
  • Review the standard of professional practice for professional engineers undertaking annual inspection and certification work;
  • Discuss the recommended tasks and deliverables to meet annual inspection and certification requirements by WorkSafeBC;
  • Provide case studies to illustrate how professionals can meet the standard of professional practice; and
  • Introduce participants to Assurance Forms provided for annual certification.

Target Audience

  • Professional engineers performing annual inspection and certification of equipment under the BC OHSR;
  • Representatives of companies that operate equipment requiring annual inspection and certification;
  • Equipment owners or lessees; and
  • Other firms who hire professional engineers to perform annual inspection and certification.

Mathew Smith, P.Eng.

Director, Professional Services, SKC Engineering

Mathew Smith is the Director of Professional Services for SKC Engineering/Applus+ Canada. He is a CWB certified welding engineer and is the retained engineer for over 150 companies for their steel and aluminum welding programs. Mathew has over 12 years of experience with the design, inspection, repair, and certification of lifting devices.

Ryan Stewart, P.Eng.

Principal, Arsenal Engineering

Ryan Stewart is a professional engineer who provides consulting engineering and inspection services with a focus on construction and lift equipment. Before starting Arsenal Engineering Ltd. at the end of 2014, Ryan worked for 10 years as a consulting engineer and non-destructive testing inspector in northern Alberta and the lower mainland of BC.

Stuart Nash, P.Eng.

Manager, Professional Practice Development and Outreach, Engineers and Geoscientists BC

As Manager of Professional Practice Development and Outreach at Engineers and Geoscientists BC, Stuart is responsible for helping to produce professional practice guidelines, supporting the association’s CPD committee and technical divisions, and liaising with outside groups of practitioners, including technical and cultural associations. Mr. Nash is a registered professional engineer with a background in municipal utility and site servicing engineering. Before joining Engineers and Geoscientists BC in 2018, he was a project manager and project engineer for a municipal engineering consultant.
