This webinar will review Engineers and Geoscientists BC's Professional Practice Guidelines: Development of Safety Critical Software. These guidelines help professionals to better understand their professional obligations when working on software projects that may pose a hazard to the public or the environment.

Webinar Description

This session will introduce some of the concepts and topics presented in the guidelines, including:

  • Who does this guideline apply to?
  • What makes software “safety-critical”?
  • How are software engineering processes, safety engineering, and security engineering concurrently addressed by the guidelines?
  • What are the key interpretations of the Engineers and Geoscientists BC quality management guidelines that apply to this area of practice?

By attending the webinar, participants should be able to understand:

  • The applicable scope of the document
  • Example roles and responsibilities that apply to such projects
  • High level activities for software, safety, and security engineering
  • High level requirements of the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management bylaws and guidelines
  • Typical experience requirements for responsible professionals

Presenters

Simon Diemert, P.Eng.

Critical Systems Labs

Simon Diemert, P.Eng., is a software and systems engineer at Critical Systems Labs Inc. based in Vancouver, BC. He specializes in software engineering for safety-critical software-intensive systems and has experience working in the automotive, health, marine, and process control domains. Simon holds a Bachelor of Software Engineering and Master of Computer Science from the University of Victoria. Simon is a professional engineer registered by Engineers and Geoscientists BC and is the chair of the organization's Software Engineering Advisory Group.

Dan Rankin, P.Eng.

Engineers and Geoscientists BC

Dan Rankin, P.Eng., is a Practice Advisor with Engineers and Geoscientists BC. Dan is responsible for managing the development of the organization's professional practice guidelines, engaging with various stakeholders to address professional practice concerns, and for providing advice to registrants regarding practice issues. Dan provides staff support to the Software Engineering Advisory Group. Dan is a professional engineer and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Mechanical) from the University of British Columbia, and a Master of Applied Science (Aerospace) from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Engineers and Geoscientists BC, Dan spent over 14 years working in multi-disciplinary roles on satellite mission projects, including as a software developer, operations engineer, and project engineer.

Jens Weber, P.Eng.

University of Victoria

Jens H. Weber, P.Eng., has been licensed as a professional engineer (Software Engineering) since 2009. He is a professor in the department of Computer Science at the University of Victoria and served as the Director of the Bachelor of Software Engineering Program (accredited by Engineers Canada) from 2007 until 2014. His research and professional practice revolves around software safety and security assurance, with a particular focus on healthcare software. He has been a volunteer member of the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Advisory Committee on Software Engineering and one of the co-authors of the organization’s new practice guideline on safety-critical software development.
