Event Description

Engineers and Geoscientists BC and the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) have been offering the Certified Professional (CP) Course since 2015. The 2021 CP and ACK Courses are now available for registration to those interested. These courses will be based on the 2018 BC Building Code and the 2019 VBBL.

About the Event

The CP Program is an alternative to the conventional building permit and inspection process utilized by the City of Vancouver, the City of Surrey, the City of Abbotsford, as well as some other Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJs. Through the program, participating municipalities can issue a building permit on the assurances of a recognized registered professional (engineer or architect)—the CP. The CP Course focuses on Part 3 and the relevant associated provisions of the BC Building Code and the Vancouver Building By-law, and on CP practice. The ACK covers all CP Course code content except for High Buildings and CP practice and does not require the completion of the CP Course projects or exams or site tours.

The CP Course schedule consists of:

  • 12 full-day sessions on Wednesdays from January 6, 2021 to March 31, 2021;
  • 1 half-day tutorial on April 14, 2021; and
  • Course concludes with 2 full-day exams.
There are no classes on February 24, 2021 (CP Course break), and April 7, 2021 (Spring Break).

The ACK Course schedule consists of:

  • 7 full-day sessions on Wednesdays from January 6, 2021 to February 17, 2021.

Although anyone may take the CP Course, only architects and engineers may practice as CPs. Intern Architects AIBC and engineers-in-training (EIT) who meet all course requirements and pass the exams will be able to practice as CPs when they become BC registered architects or engineers.

The 2021 CP and ACK Course will be online, and the CP Exams will be in person. All COVID-19-related health and safety protocols and BC Ministry of Health recommendations will be followed. There will be no increase in the fee for the CP Course this year because of COVID-19.

The BC Employer Training Grant which may cover up to 60% of your costs. You'll need to set up a BCeID account to use the system and apply for the grant.
