The seminar series will enable knowledge sharing between attendees and building sector professionals with first-hand experience in deep retrofits, with a goal of removing barriers and increasing the confidence and capacity of registrants to take on existing building energy and emissions retrofit projects. Other events in this series include:
- Heat Pump Technology Assessment in Deep Retrofits;
- The Business Case for Deep Retrofits; and
- Building Enclosure Technology Assessment in Deep Retrofits.
The first event in this series will provide an introduction to deep retrofits, as explored through the project examples of subject matter experts. The webinar will set the context by providing an overview of the current policy and market landscape around deep retrofits. Through a series of case studies, the presenters will then share strategies, best practices, and lessons learned from their own projects. They will offer insights on how deep retrofits can be planned in a manner that provides optimal resiliency co-benefits.
The presenters will also share their 2–5 year outlook on how they see the market and policy landscape evolving and how this might impact deep retrofit work in Part 3 buildings in the coming years. Following the presentations, participants will be invited to engage with the presenters through a facilitated panel discussion. Attendees will also be able to provide input to Engineers and Geoscientists BC on how it can support its registrants though the development of resources and training material.

Scott is an engineer, entrepreneur and environmentalist who cares deeply about the impact of climate change on future generations. Starting SES as a sole proprietorship, Scott has grown it into a unique small business that empowers his staff to practice innovative engineering to tackle the challenge of dramatically reducing emissions in clients’ buildings. SES has designed and overseen the implementation of many different types of carbon reducing solutions including heat recovery chillers, CO2 heat pumps, electrification upgrades, and advanced building automation control.
Principal, Senior Project Manager, RDH Building Science
Christy has over 18 years’ experience designing, evaluating, and researching energy- and water-efficient solutions for the built environment. She has focused specifically on the intersection of energy, emissions and existing buildings over the past several years. Completed projects include the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of (8) deep HVAC system retrofits in small commercial buildings; in-service evaluation of heat pump retrofits in existing homes, climate resilience studies for multi-family buildings, and program development support for efficient electrification programs.
Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability Initiatives, Engineers and Geoscientists BC
Harshan supports programs and initiatives as they relate to areas of climate action, adaptation, water management, sustainability, and energy efficiency. This includes work on providing professional practice guidance to registrants on matters related to the professional practice of engineering and geoscience in BC and through Engineers Canada, nationally. Harshan also provides staff support to Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Climate Change Advisory Group, Sustainability committee, and other designated committees, including the BC Energy Step Code Council.
Innes is a professional engineer and resource management consultant with twenty-five years of experience in energy efficient low carbon buildings for new and retrofit projects. Innes is also an experienced facilitator with ongoing projects that combine technical and financial analysis balanced by values-based stakeholder input to support improved outcomes.
