Parental Leave Options for Registrants During Annual Renewal

During registration renewal, we have three options for professional registrants going on parental leave. Please consider your practising status to determine which of the following three options applies to your situation:

Your Practising Status during Registration Renewal
Annual Fee
Practising as of January 1
Registrant must pay the full practising fee
Non-practising as of January 1 (learn more about moving to non-practising status)
Registrant must pay the non-practising fee
Practising as of January 1 but foresee yourself earning less than $40,000 for the year because of an upcoming parental leave
Registrant can apply for the reduced annual fee

Annual Renewal Requirements

When registrants are renewing their registration for the upcoming year, they must opt for the status that applies to them as of January 1.

If the registrant is on parental leave as of January 1, then they may opt for non-practising status and reinstate their practising rights when they return to work.

If a registrant is working as of January 1 but expects to go on parental leave during the upcoming year (and will earn less than $40,000 in active income), then they may opt for the reduced fee.

Move to Non-Practising Status

Professional registrants going on parental leave also have the option of moving to non-practising status, which would result in a 25% reduction of the annual fee.

Non-practising registrants do not have practice rights but may reinstate their practising rights when they decide to return to work from their parental leave. Upon reinstating, they will have to pay a reinstatement fee and the prorated difference between the non-practising and practising fee based on the remaining months of the calendar year after the date of reinstatement.

Please be advised that non-practising status only applies to professional registrants and not trainees (EITs or GITs).

For more information, visit the About Non-Practising Status webpage.

Apply for a Reduced Annual Fee

Registrants can apply for a reduced annual fee based on financial hardship, which is 50% of the annual fee.

Reduced fees due to financial hardship are based on an active income of $40,000 per annum, or less. Registrants who apply for a reduced fee will be able to keep their practising rights.

For more information, visit the Reduction of Annual Fees page.

Continuing Education Exemptions

Professional registrants may apply for a Continuing Education (CE) exemption if they wish to maintain practice rights while on parental leave.

For more information, visit the Alternative Options for Reporting CE Requirements webpage.
