Discipline Notice: Rolando Syjuco, P.Eng.

In a September 5, 2025, Consent Order, Rolando Syjuco, P.Eng., admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct in relation to the engineering services he provided for the structural design of a residence in Ladysmith, BC.

As of September 19, 2025, Mr. Syjuco’s registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC is suspended for a period of two months.

Between 2017 and 2020, Mr. Syjuco issued structural design drawings for a residence in Ladysmith, BC. Mr. Syjuco designed elements of the Ladysmith project in accordance with Part 9 of the BC Building Code 2012, rather than Part 4 of the BC Building Code 2012, in circumstances where the engineering complexity of the structure required all elements to be designed in accordance with Part 4.

In the Consent Order, Mr. Syjuco admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct contrary to the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, and agreed that, among other things, he:

  • failed to specify an adequate lateral load resisting system in relation to the drawings by failing to detail a continuous load path between roof diaphragms and shear walls;
  • failed to account for snow-buildup load on roof trusses when issuing the drawings;
  • specified inadequate design loads for an open web steel joist roof, which resulted in the steel joists being designed with inadequate strength; and
  • failed to obtain documented independent reviews for the Ladysmith project’s structural designs prior to construction, as required by section 14(b)(4) of the Bylaws of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

As outlined in the Consent Order, prior to the end of his suspension, Mr. Syjuco must complete several Engineers and Geoscientists BC webinars. Following the conclusion of the suspension period, Mr. Syjuco will be subject to direct supervision for a period of 4 months or 4 projects, whichever comes later.

Six months after the conclusion of the direct supervision period, Mr. Syjuco must undergo a practice review conducted by the Audit and Practice Review Committee. Mr. Syjuco agreed to pay $15,000 towards the legal and investigative costs of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
