Registration and Reinstatement Policies

The following collection of policies are intended to guide candidates in their application for registration or reinstatement with Engineers and Geoscientists BC, while establishing clear standards and consistency for the application process.

They outline the requirements and procedures that support fair, consistent, and transparent evaluation. These policies may be reviewed and revised as necessary to reflect best practices and operational changes.

All policies have been developed in accordance with the Bylaws of Engineers and Geoscientists BC and the Professional Governance Act [SBC 2018] Chapter 47.

Words and terms that are capitalized throughout these policy documents have definitions that are specific to this set of policies. Please refer to these Defined Terms when reviewing these policies.

Academic Policies (4)

Policy 1.A

1.A Minimum Academic Requirements for Registration as a Professional Engineer

Outlines the academic requirements for registration as a professional engineer (P.Eng.) to ensure that Applicants have attained a sufficient level of engineering theory and principles through academic study.

Please note, this policy also applies to applicants for registration as an Engineer-in-Training.

Policy 1.B

1.B Minimum Academic Requirements for Registration as a Professional Geoscientist

Outlines the academic requirements for registration as a professional geoscientist (P.Geo.) to ensure that Applicants have attained a sufficient level of geoscience theory and principles through academic study.

Please note, this policy also applies to applicants for registration as a Geoscientist-in-Training.

Policy 1.C

1.C Looking to Exempt (Engineering)

Outlines an alternative method and its eligibility criteria to establish academic equivalency for Applicants for professional engineer (P.Eng.) registration who have:

Non-accredited undergraduate degrees in applied science or engineering, and
Work experience in the same discipline of their degrees.

Policy 1.D

1.D Out of Discipline (Engineering)

Outlines a method of academic evaluation for a professional engineer (P.Eng.) Applicant’s registration whose discipline of work experience is substantially different from the discipline of their undergraduate degree.

Administrative Policies (11)

Policy 2.A

2.A Conflict of Interest and Impartiality

Describes how fairness and impartiality in the review of Applicants by avoiding situations and circumstances where there is a real or perceived conflict of interest or bias.

Policy 2.B

2.B Examination Misconduct

Outlines measures in place to prevent, detect, investigate and adjudicate examination misconduct incidences, including examples of examination misconduct and potential consequences.

Policy 2.C

2.C Accommodations for Applicants who are Refugees, Displaced Persons, or Persons in a Refugee-like Situation

Ensures administrative fairness by allowing provisions and reducing financial hardship for refugees, displaced persons, and persons in a refugee-like situation who are unable to obtain or provide traditional documentary evidence.

Policy 2.D

2.D Reconsideration of a Decision of the Credentials Committee

Outlines the required documentation and process for Applicants requesting a Reconsideration of a Decision of the Credentials Committee when an application is rejected with written reasons.

Policy 2.E

2.E Inter-Provincial/Territorial Mobility

Facilitates the registration of an Applicant who is the equivalent of a Registrant In Good Standing with another Regulatory Authority in Canada and outlines the required documentation and information to apply.

Policy 2.F

2.F Use of Statutory Declarations

Outlines the required documentation and process for Applicants who are unable to confirm that their documents are true copies of the originals, or unable to submit traditional required documentary evidence to the organization for registration due to extraordinary circumstances.

2.G English Language Competency for Entry to Professional Practice

Outlines the English language competency requirements for registration.

Policy 2.H

2.H Treating an Existing Applicant as a New Applicant

Describes the circumstances under which an existing Applicant’s file is treated as though the application were new.

Policy 2.I

2.I Deactivation of Applications

Defines the criteria and process of deactivating applications such that the process is fair and objective and defines what is to be done with the data submitted by the Applicant and generated in the review of the application.

Policy 2.J

2.J Requirement for Documents to be in English

Outlines the requirement for documents to be in English or translated by a certified translator into English, in line with the organization's language of business.

Policy 2.K

2.K Granting a Second Interview

Outlines the circumstances in which a second interview is granted to ensure administrative fairness in the application process.

Policy 3.A

3.A Rejection of an Application for an Indictable Offence

Outlines the procedure that the Credentials Committee follows when evaluating an application for registration or reinstatement of an individual who has been convicted of an indictable offence.

Experience & Competencies Policies (5)

Policy 4.A

4.A Currency of Experience

Outlines the currency of experience requirement in the evaluation of an Applicant’s experience pursuant to the Bylaws of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

Policy 4.B

4.B Pre-Graduate and Postgraduate Experience

Outlines acceptable pre-graduate and postgraduate experience that can be reported as part of the minimum four-year experience requirement for registration as a professional engineer (P.Eng.) or professional geoscientist (P.Geo.).

4.C Dual Registration as a Professional Engineer and a Professional Geoscientist

Outlines the experience required for dual registration as a professional engineer (P.Eng.) and a professional geoscientist (P.Geo.).

Policy 4.D

4.D Experience Validators

Provides guidance on the eligibility, roles, and responsibilities of experience validators for Applicants and Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

Policy 4.E

4.E Registration Interviews

Describes and outlines process of registration interviews, including a description of the interview panel, types of interviews, and the process for postponed or cancelled interviews.
