Apply to be a Geoscientist-in-Training in BC
The geoscientist-in-training (GIT) category is for individuals who are in the process of acquiring the four years of work experience needed to apply for their professional geoscientist (P.Geo.) designation.
This page applies to you if this is your first time applying for registration as a GIT in Canada. There is a different application process if you are already registered as a GIT with another Canadian regulator.
Benefits
Becoming a GIT allows you to:
- Use the designation “GIT” after your name and refer to yourself as a geoscientist-in-training;
- Gain access to programs and services exclusively for GITs and other registrants of Engineers and Geoscientists BC, including our Continuing Education programs;
- Have your application fee waived, or pay a reduced fee, when you apply for professional registration;
- Pay reduced rates to attend continuing education events; and
- Receive Engineers and Geoscientists BC's quarterly Innovation magazine.
Academic Requirements
To apply for registration as a GIT, you must have graduated from a university-level bachelor degree program in applied science, engineering, geoscience, science, or technology.
If you do not have an undergraduate degree in geoscience with courses that satisfy the syllabus requirements, you may be assigned academic examinations and/or an interview. We will let you know if this applies to you after we review your application.
Generally, you may not need to take academic examinations if one of the following applies:
- Your undergraduate geoscience degree is recognized by the Institute of Geologists of Ireland for graduates since 2013.
- You have an undergraduate geoscience degree and at least seven years of geoscience experience in a professional context.
Good Character Requirement
All applicants must show that they are of good character and good repute. Engineers and Geoscientists BC will review the information provided in your application to ensure you meet these standards. See Character Requirement and Hearings for more information.
How to Apply
Apply for your GIT registration through our online portal.
Required Documents
You will need to provide the following documents to apply to be a GIT:
- A completed online application
- Certified copies of two pieces of government-issued identification (ID). Both pieces of ID must contain your full legal name and be valid (i.e., not expired) at the time of registration. At least one piece of ID must contain your photo. Please refer to the Guideline on Certified Identification Documents for a list of acceptable certifying officials and the steps for ID certification. Please upload the certified copies of the two pieces of ID as a single PDF on the application dashboard.
- Official academic transcripts sent directly to Engineers and Geoscientists BC from your post-secondary institution(s). You can use our transcript request letter to ask the institution(s) to send your transcripts to us.
- A completed Self-Evaluation Checklist for your discipline of application
- A description of each course you completed that you are claiming on your Self-Evaluation Checklist. For more information about acceptable course descriptions, see the Guideline to Completing Geoscience Checklists and Course Descriptions.
- Thesis abstracts for master’s or PhD programs, if applicable
Fees
See our Fees page to find out the current application fee. The application fee is waived if you are applying within 12 months of graduating from a post-secondary geoscience program.
Application Review
We will review your application once we have received all of your required documents. Due to the volume of applications we receive, it may take up to four months for us to review your application.
Check Your Application StatusIf we approve your application, we will send you a notification email and a certificate, and you can begin calling yourself an geoscientist-in-training.
