Reserved Practice and Federal Requirements

In Canada, the regulation of professions falls within provincial jurisdiction. The BC government has given Engineers and Geoscientists BC the responsibility to protect the public interest by regulating the practice of professional engineering and geoscience in British Columbia under the authority of the Professional Governance Act (PGA). To meet its public protection obligations, Engineers and Geoscientists BC must prevent the practice of professional engineering or geoscience in British Columbia without proper regulatory oversight. Therefore, any person or firm engaged in the reserved practice of professional engineering or geoscience in British Columbia, including those with regulatory obligations under federal law, must meet Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s requirements.

Accordingly, registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC is mandatory for all people and firms practicing the reserved practice of professional engineering or geoscience in British Columbia, including professionals working for the federal government or industries with federal regulatory requirements.

If you have any questions about the need to register, or if you have concerns about unauthorized practice or misuse of title by individuals or firms not registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC, you can contact [email protected].
