Discipline Notice: Alfonso Manuel Sotres, P.Eng.

In a March 3, 2026, Consent Order, Alfonso Manuel Sotres admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct in relation to the engineering services he provided for a project in Trail, BC.

Effective immediately, Mr. Sotres is subject to a practice restriction. Mr. Sotres’ registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC is suspended for a period of two months commencing on March 16.

In 2018, Mr. Sotres provided engineering services in relation to a counterweight lifting beam which failed during the lifting and removal of an industrial furnace in a plant in Trail. Mr. Sotres was retained to review and authenticate design drawings and the load testing report for the counterweight lifting beam utilized in the project.

Mr. Sotres admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct and that he failed to adequately design and review the counterweight lifting beam, including by preparing adequate calculations. In addition, Mr. Sotres admitted that he failed to ensure the safety and redundancy in the design of the counterweight lifting beam.

During his two-month suspension period, Mr. Sotres is required to make reasonable arrangements to transfer his ongoing professional engineering project files to other professional engineers. Prior to the end of his suspension period, Mr. Sotres is required to complete an educational seminar.

Effective immediately, Mr. Sotres is subject to a practice restriction that prohibits him from performing any engineering work related to the design, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and operation of below-the-hook lifting devices, including counterweight lifting beams. Should Mr. Sotres wish to lift or modify his practice restriction, he must complete additional educational courses and he will be subject to peer review for a minimum period of 12 months and two projects, whichever comes later.

Mr. Sotres agreed to pay $5,000 towards the legal and investigative costs of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
