Discipline Notice: Benedict Bun Chuen Yuen

On November 14, 2025, a panel of the Discipline Committee of Engineers and Geoscientists BC found that Benedict Bun Chuen Yuen demonstrated unprofessional conduct in relation to the structural engineering services he provided for a building in Powell River, BC.
In 2019, Mr. Yuen provided structural engineering services in support of a building permit application to the City of Powell River for a change of occupancy and proposed renovations, including a seismic upgrade, to a building within the City.
Specifically, Mr. Yuen did not adequately investigate the structural components of the existing structure to inform the engineering and the preparation of the structural drawings that he prepared that detailed the proposed upgrades to the building that he authenticated; Mr. Yuen failed to apply the required engineering methodology to determine the number and location of the new shear walls required to upgrade the existing structure and ensure the Project was compliant with the 2018 British Columbia Building Code; Mr. Yuen failed to adequately prepare structural calculations to support the Design; and Mr. Yuen failed to adequately create a report and conduct document field reviews of the Project.
On September 15-17, 2025, the Panel conducted a hearing concerning the conduct of Mr. Yuen. On November 14, 2025, the Panel issued their decision finding that Mr. Yuen demonstrated unprofessional conduct contrary to the Professional Governance Act.
On February 3, 2026, the Panel issued their decision on penalty and costs. Mr. Yuen’s registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC is cancelled and he is not to apply for reinstatement with Engineers and Geoscientists BC for a period of six months. Mr. Yuen was ordered to pay $28,000 towards the legal costs of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
