Discipline Notice: Christopher Michael Hudec, P.Eng.

In an August 13, 2026, Consent Order, Christopher Michael Hudec, P.Eng., admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct in relation to the design of a retaining wall in Nanaimo, BC. As of September 1, 2026, Mr. Hudec’s registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC is suspended for four months.

In or around 2020 to 2021, Mr. Hudec provided engineering services in relation to the design of a retaining wall for an area upgrade in Nanaimo. Before sealing the drawings, Mr. Hudec failed to undertake an initial assessment of the site of the retaining wall. In addition, Mr. Hudec failed to perform a geotechnical investigation of the retaining wall’s site and failed to undertake design calculations recommended by applicable retaining wall guidelines.

On August 13, 2026, Mr. Hudec and Engineers and Geoscientists BC agreed to a Consent Order. Among other things, Mr. Hudec admitted that he demonstrated unprofessional conduct relating to the retaining wall, and he agreed that he:

• failed to adequately investigate the physical setting and existing conditions for the location of the retaining wall;
• failed to confirm the design requirements and design criteria of the retaining wall with the City of Nanaimo;
• failed to perform the necessary calculations to ensure that the design of the retaining wall met the required minimum factors of safety;
• failed to perform a site-specific seismic ground response analysis when soft soil conditions were present; and
• failed to perform global stability and bearing capacity calculations.

As outlined in the consent order, Mr. Hudec’s registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC was suspended for four months commencing on September 1, 2026.

Prior to the end of his suspension, Mr. Hudec must complete the Professional Engineering and Geoscience Practice in BC Online Seminar and several Engineers and Geoscientists BC webinars.

Following the conclusion of the suspension period, Mr. Hudec’s work relating to the design of retaining walls and other earth-retaining structures and geotechnical designs involving preloading, surcharging, or other ground improvement works must be subject to peer review for 12 months or the completion of three projects related to design work, whichever comes later. Following the peer review period, Mr. Hudec must undergo a practice review conducted by the Audit and Practice Review Committee.

Mr. Hudec agreed to pay $12,500 towards the legal costs of Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
