Henderson Rains Scholarship

Application Guidelines

The Henderson Rains Scholarship supports second-year engineering students at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Wayne is a Kelowna-raised professional engineer who has had a successful career and made a significant contribution to the BC structural industry as the principal of Advance Precast. One scholarship, valued at $2,500, is awarded on the basis of a combination of factors including academic achievement, community activities, and a student statement.

Your application form and all supporting documents must be submitted electronically by the application deadline.

Deadline

Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM on September 30, 2023.

Eligibility

  • Students enrolled in their second year in the Faculty of Applied Science (Engineering) at UBC’s Okanagan Campus in Kelowna, BC.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in courses or in a co-op program for the current academic year.
  • Applicants must be full-time UBC Okanagan engineering students in the current academic year.
  • Previously successful applicants who still qualify under the criteria above are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

  • Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
  • Only applications submitted using this online form will be accepted. Mailed, faxed, or emailed applications will not be accepted.

  • Section B, C, D, and E are evaluated on weighted percentages.

Section B: Student Statement (30%)

In 500 words or less, explain your views on how engineering impacts society. This is an important selection factor.*

Section C: Professional Characteristics (30%)

In 500 words or less, please describe how you have exemplified the character traits of a professional over the past few years. Examples of professional characteristics include ethics, excellence, and progress. This could also include volunteering, extra-curricular learning, and active involvement within the industry.*

Section E: Academics (25%)

Transcripts are not required to reflect excellence, but if you would like to demonstrate previous struggles with education, and have addressed them within the content of your other responses or supporting material, you may upload unofficial or official transcripts. Winners must provide official transcripts to the Student Program Coordinator before receipt of the award.*

Section F: Supporting Material (Optional)

Please upload any supporting documents (e.g., reference letters, portfolios, samples of project work, etc.) that will strengthen your application. Reference letters can be from:

  • A professor or co-op coordinator who knows you and your achievements personally;
  • A co-op employer or a registrant of Engineers and Geoscientists BC (professional engineer or professional geoscientist); or
  • A prominent member of your community if the above are not possible.
