Application Guidelines

The E.E. Readshaw Memorial Scholarship was established by the Estate of Edward Emerson (Dick) Readshaw, P.Eng., through the E.E. Readshaw Memorial Scholarship Endowment, to honour his love of engineering, his passion for artistry, and his devotion to public service in British Columbia. 

Dick had an exemplary career with the Ministry of Highways, serving as Director of Highway Design and Survey and playing a pivotal role in major infrastructure projects across the province, culminating in the spectacular Coquihalla Highway. A true "Renaissance man," Dick was also an avid sailor and watercolour artist who drew deep inspiration from BC's coastal waters. Through his extensive work negotiating highway rights-of-way, he recognized a vital need to build engineering capacity within First Nations communities. 

This scholarship supports students with strong academic standing who are pursuing advanced graduate education (master's or PhD) in coastal engineering. In alignment with Dick's vision, special consideration and priority are given to building coastal engineering capacity for First Nations students and communities.  

Each scholarship is valued at $5,000 per year and is renewable for a second consecutive academic year ($10,000 total potential support per recipient), subject to meeting continuing eligibility requirements.  

Eligibility

Before you begin your application, please ensure you meet all the following criteria: 

  • Connection to British Columbia: Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria: 
    • Completed secondary education (Grade 12) at a publicly funded high school in British Columbia; or 
    • Attended an accredited community college or university in British Columbia or Canada; or 
    • For applicants from Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or recent immigrants: Evidence that you or your family currently reside in BC and that you pursued publicly funded education in your home territory or country of origin. 
  • Current or Completed Undergraduate Studies: Applicants must have completed, or be nearing completion of, a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in engineering or applied sciences from an accredited institution in BC, Canada, or internationally, with a clear academic pathway toward graduate studies in coastal engineering.
  • Graduate Enrollment: Applicants must be currently enrolled in (or accepted to) an accredited master’s or PhD program at an accredited Canadian university for the upcoming academic year. (Note: Enrolling in an accredited international university graduate program may be considered by EGEFBC on a case-by-case basis). 
  • Academic Standing: Applicants must have a strong academic record (typically a GPA of 3.3/4.0 or B+ equivalent in the most recent two years of study). 
  • Coastal/Marine Focus: Applicants' specific graduate area of study or research project must fall under coastal engineering or a related engineering discipline with a strong coastal or marine emphasis, including:
    • Coastal Engineering (Wave mechanics, shoreline protection, wave-structure/shoreline interaction, etc.) 
    • Civil Engineering (Marine infrastructure, port & harbor design) 
    • Environmental Engineering (Coastal erosion, sea-level rise mitigation) 
    • Geotechnical Engineering / Maritime Geotechnics (Marine soil behavior, offshore or coastal foundations) 
    • Ocean Engineering (Marine hydrodynamics)
  • Commitment to Study: Applicants must intend to remain enrolled in this specialized field for at least the next two (2) consecutive academic years.

Your statement must clearly demonstrate how your work aligns with the scholarship’s focus on Coastal or Marine engineering and why you are interested in coastal engineering. Academic Goals: How will the specific graduate program at your chosen Canadian university advance your expertise in this specialized field? Impact: How do you envision your work contributing to the engineering profession in British Columbia or the broader Canadian coastal landscape? Long-term Commitment: As this scholarship offers a potential second-year renewal, briefly outline your two-year academic roadmap. *
