2018 Science Games Registration FAQ

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about the changes to the registration process for the 2018 Science Games.

  • 1. What are the steps for registering for the 2018 Science Games?
    1. Compile your team information
    2. Enter the lottery
    3. Complete your team registration
    4. Team registration confirmed

For more information about each step, please see below:

    1. Compile your team information: You will need the following information to enter the lottery.
      • Name of adult team leaders (there should be one adult team leader for each team registered for the Science Games),
      • The email address for your adult team leader,
      • First and last names of all your student team members, and
      • Full name of your group/organization (e.g., Hadfield Elementary School, 23rd Cloverfield Brownies, etc.)
    2. Enter the lottery: Fill out one lottery entrance form for your team when registration opens on Monday, November 6, 2017. Be sure to enter the lottery by the end of day, Sunday, November 12, 2017, to enter your team into the team lottery draw.
Before entering the lottery make sure you have the items listed in Step 1 confirmed about your team. Incomplete entries will not be eligible.
    1. Complete your team registration: All teams will receive an email stating whether they were successful in the lottery or if they have been placed on the Science Games waitlist. If your team is selected to participate, you will receive a registration code and registration link to sign up your team for this event. Selected teams must:
      • Register online using the information provided, and
      • Submit Photo and Video Release Forms for all of their team members by December 5, 2017.
Registrations not completed by December 5, 2017 will result in forfeit of a team’s participation in the event. If your team is waitlisted, you will be contacted as team spaces become available. You will then have three weeks to complete the registration steps above.
    1. Confirmation of your team registration: Engineers and Geoscientists BC will send you an email confirmation once all elements of your registration have been completed. Your team registration is not complete until you receive a confirmation email from us.
  • 2. How do I enter the lottery and begin the registration process?

Teams will be able to enter the lottery online when it opens on Monday, November 6, 2017.

  • 3. How many entries can I submit into the lottery?

You should only submit one lottery entry per team. If you have more than one team which would like to participate in the 2018 Science Games, you would submit one lottery entry for each interested team.

Please see below for more information on registering multiple teams.

  • 4. Can a student's name appear on more than one team?

No. Individual students should only be listed as a member of one team entered into the Science Games Lottery.

For example, if Student A is listed as a member of Team A, they should not be listed as a member of Team B or any other teams entered into the lottery. This is to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to participate in the Science Games.

  • 5. Is there a deadline to enter the lottery?

To ensure your team is included in the lottery draw for the 2018 Science Games make sure to enter the lottery by Sunday, November 12, 2017.

  • 6. What happens after I enter the lottery?

All teams that enter the lottery will receive an email on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. This email will either include detailed registration instructions, like a registration code and link, or state that you are on the 2018 Science Games waitlist.

  • 7. How do I complete my team registration if my team is successful in the lottery?

After entering the lottery, you will receive an email on Tuesday, November 14, 2017,  with detailed instructions on how to complete your team registration. This email will include a registration code and link if your team has been reserved a spot for the 2018 Science Games.

Successful teams will need to register online and submit a Photo and Video Release Form for each student team member by December 5, 2017. If these steps are not completed by the deadline, your team will automatically lose its spot to participate in this event and a team will be contacted from the waitlist.

If your team is unsuccessful in the lottery you will be placed on the waitlist and contacted when a space becomes available.

  • 8. Do all teams have the same chance to win a spot in the lottery?

In each Division a certain number of spots will be reserved for all girl groups to participate. Engineers and Geoscientists BC has endorsed Engineers Canada’s goal that by 2030, 30% of new engineering registrations will be female. Reserving spots for all girl groups to participate in the Science Games is a part of our commitment to that goal.

  • 9. Is there any restriction as to how many teams can participate from the same organization in the same Division?

Yes. This year, only one team can participate in each Division from the same organization. For example, a local school could potentially enter two teams into the lottery in Division 1 and two teams in Division 2. If one of their teams is picked in the lottery and completes their registration, the other team in that Division would not be eligible to participate.

  • 10. How many teams can I enter into the lottery?

You can enter more than one team into the lottery; however, there is a limit of how many teams can participate in each Division from the same organization. This year, only one team can participate in each Division from the same organization during the initial draw. Afterwards, additional teams from the same organization will be part of the selection process for the remaining spaces.

For example, a local school could potentially enter two teams into the lottery in Division 1 and two teams in Division 2. If one of their teams is picked in the lottery, the other team in that Division would not be eligible to be selected during the initial lottery draw. The other team could potentially receive a spot to participate in the Science Games if registration does not fill up after the initial draw. At that point all team spaces are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • 11. Why did you decide to set up registration as a web-based process?

Engineers and Geoscientists BC has adjusted registration to a web-based process to provide a fair opportunity for more teams from other organizations to participate.

  • 12. What happens if there are still spaces for teams to register for this event after the lottery has closed?

There is room for 16 teams to participate in each Division of the Science Games. Both Divisions have filled up every year, however one Division may take longer to fill up than the other. If there are less than 16 teams in a Division that enter the Science Games lottery by Sunday, November 12, 2017, those remaining spaces will be given out on a first come, first served basis.

  • 13. I am not an Engineers and Geoscientists BC member. How can I register my team for this event?

After your team has gone through the lottery process and received a registration code the next step to register is to reserve a spot for your team. To do this, you will need an Engineers and Geoscientists BC account. You can create a non-member account for free. Create a new account online. Make sure to save your User ID and password.

  • 14. How much does it cost to register a team for the 2018 Science Games?

It costs $25 to register a team for the Science Games.

  • 15. How many students can participate on one Science Games Team?

Science Games teams are made up of 4–5 students. All of the activities at this event are designed to be completed by a maximum of 5 students.
